23/03/2007 - GeniX successfully tested at Marresearch for protein crystallography

Xenocs' successfully tested the GeniX micro-beam delivery tested in a protein crystallography application with MARresearch, a market leader in the field. Complete data sets of various-size lysozyme crystals were acquired that allowed accurate structure determination using the sulfur SAD phasing method.

Experimental tests were performed using the GeniX miro-beam generator coupled with the MAR345dtb system. The results were compared with the data acquired using a traditional rotating anode generator operating at 2kW in a small focus configuration (0.2 x 2 mm). Both systems provided similar quality data, while for the smallest lysozyme crystal the GeniX setup outperformed the rotating anode.

The GeniX product platform features a stable water-cooled micro focus x-ray source and a single reflection graded multilayer optic. Despite its high brilliance, GeniX runs at low power (50 watts) andt constitutes a compact, low maintenance system with minimal operating cost.

The combination of GeniX CU High Flux with the MAR 345 image plate detector and the powerful desktop beamline (dtb) goniometer is a high performance, cost-effective X-ray system capable of delivering extremely good data in a relatively short time. Due to the high photon counts and the small size of the beam in the focal plane, the system is particularly useful for analyzing small crystals ( < 100
m).
