BAM inaugurates state-of-the-art SAXS facility from Xenocs
On January 26, BAM – the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing – in Berlin inaugurated their new SAXS facility. The new facility, dubbed MAUS for “Multi-scale Analyser for Ultrafine Structures”, was supplied to BAM by Xenocs.

The investment follows a round robin of nanoparticle size measurement by SAXS organized by BAM scientists Dr. Andreas Thünemann and Dr. Brian Pauw.
The results showed the capability of SAXS for precise measurements at the nanoscale and their publication was elected “paper of the month” at BAM1.
Dr. Brian Pauw, who worked closely with the Xenocs team on the project, gave the inaugural speech, insisting on how the instrument will be available to other groups through the BAM Very Small Initiative. In his presentation, Xenocs CEO Peter Høghøj showed some of the exciting applications of SAXS and pointed out how Dr. Pauw has contributed to the advancement of SAXS usage through his review-paper Everything SAXS2, approaching 100 000 downloads to date, and through his blog “Looking at Nothing”3.
“Xenocs is proud to have supplied the innovative instrument to one of the leading groups doing research with SAXS. Xenocs worked closely with its partner Saxslab -now a part of Xenocs- to provide innovative features and to assure a delivery on time as well as training to BAM. Many of the instrument features are now available in the Xeuss 2.0 Q-Xoom, the latest evolution of the SAXS beamline for the laboratory from Xenocs” said Peter Høghøj.
