03/11/2008 - Small source for small angle at UCSB

Since its installation in early 2008, the GeniX Cu Low Divergence (LD) beam delivery system has seen constant use in the 18 meter SAXS system at the Material Research Laboratory (MRL) at UCSB. Replacing a traditional Cu rotating anode with KB optics, the GeniX LD system delivers over an order of magnitude greater flux on the sample. The demand for access to the instrument has grown as users have come to appreciate the rapid data acquisition time and the excellent S/N that the system offers.

As an example of the capabilities of the GeniX LD, we compare SAXS data from a solution sample of microtubules (MT) collected using the GeniX and at beamline 4-2 of the SSRL. Although the data collected with the GeniX is a factor of 40 less intense compared to the synchrotron, the relevant features are all well defined in as little as 20 minutes – a “remarkable feat” according to Pr. Youli Li of the UCSB MRL. More results are described in the SAXS page.
